What are bed bugs? Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are flat, reddish-brown, apple-seed-sized insects that feed exclusively on blood. They don’t transmit disease but their bites cause intense itching, and their psychological impact on affected individuals can be significant. A single pregnant female hitchhiking home in your bag can start an infestation within weeks.
The hotel room inspection (do this before unpacking):
1.Pull back the bedding and inspect the mattress seams — look for rust-colored stains, tiny dark specks (fecal matter), and shed skins.
2.Check the box spring, headboard, and bed frame — use your phone flashlight.
3.Inspect behind the headboard (most commonly attached to the wall in hotels).
4.Check furniture near the bed: nightstands, sofas, luggage racks.
If you find evidence of bed bugs, request a different room and inform management immediately.
Protective travel habits:
Keep luggage on a hard luggage rack, never on the floor or bed·
Use light-colored luggage (bed bugs are easier to spot)·
Keep a large ziplock bag or hotel dry-cleaning bag around your suitcase overnight·
When you return home, unpack in the garage or bathroom, not the bedroom·
Wash all clothes immediately in hot water (bed bugs die at 122°F / 50°C) and dry on high heat for 30+ minutes.
If you suspect you’ve brought bed bugs home: Inspect your home immediately, targeting the mattress, box spring, bed frame, and nearby furniture. Heat treatment of affected items (in a dryer on high) is your best immediate response before seeking professional treatment.
